Inline Cup Filling Machine or Rotary? An Honest Buyer's Guide
Multi-lane inline cup fillers win on raw volume. For plants running up to 30 cups per minute across several SKUs, our SDH-R rotary fills, seals and lids in one pass on a 44 × 52 in footprint.
An inline cup filling machine moves cups in straight rows, usually across several parallel lanes, through denesting, filling, sealing and lidding stations; multi-lane inline lines on the market commonly run from about 60 to 200+ cups per minute. Hummus Pack does not build inline machines. Our SDH-R is a rotary alternative that fills, seals and lids up to 30 CPM (18-25 real-world) at ±0.5% accuracy in a 44 × 52 in footprint.

What Is an Inline Cup Filling Machine?
An inline cup filling machine carries cups along a straight path, station by station, instead of around a rotating dial. Cups sit in carrier plates or pockets on a chain, and the whole row indexes forward together: cups are denested, filled, sealed, coded and discharged at the far end. Most production inline fillers are multi-lane, so every index fills two, four, six or more cups at once, which is where their throughput comes from.
To be clear from the start: Hummus Pack does not build inline machines. We design and build the SDH-R, a rotary cup filling machine made in Calgary, Alberta. For many fresh-food plants running under 30 cups per minute, rotary turns out to be the better fit. Where an inline cup filling machine is the right answer, we say so below.
Inline, linear, multi-lane and form-fill-seal
- Inline or linear cup filler: pre-formed cups are denested into carriers and moved in a straight line.
- Multi-lane cup filler: an inline machine with parallel lanes, each with its own denester and filling nozzle.
- Form-fill-seal (FFS): thermoforms cups from roll stock, then fills and seals them. The SDH-R runs pre-formed cups and tubs only.
- Rotary cup filler: an indexing turret carries cups past each station in a circle on a compact frame.
How an Inline Cup Filling and Sealing Machine Works
Most inline cup filling and sealing machines repeat one sequence across every lane on each index, using a chain with carrier plates or a walking beam that steps cups forward. A typical line runs:
- Denesting: one magazine and denester per lane drops cups into the pockets.
- Cup detection: sensors stop empty pockets from being dosed.
- Filling: a manifold with one piston or valve per lane doses every cup at once.
- Secondary dosing (optional): toppings or a second layer at a further station.
- Sealing: film is laid across all lanes, heat sealed and cut, or pre-cut lids are placed and sealed.
- Gas flushing and overcapping (optional), then coding and discharge to a takeaway conveyor.
Why lane count drives everything on a linear cup filling machine
Throughput on a multi-lane cup filler is roughly lanes multiplied by cycles per minute, which is why market figures range from about 60 cups per minute to 200+ on wide frames. Each extra lane also adds a denester, a nozzle, a row of pockets and a seal cavity to clean and calibrate.
Multi-Lane Cup Filler Throughput vs Footprint and Cost
Inline speed is real, but it is not free. Weigh throughput against the floor space, capital and supporting equipment it needs. Inline figures below are general market tendencies, not Hummus Pack specifications.
Multi-lane inline cup filler vs SDH-R rotary: throughput, footprint and cost
| Factor | Typical multi-lane inline line | Hummus Pack SDH-R (rotary) |
|---|---|---|
| Output | Commonly about 60 to 200+ cups/min, depending on lanes | Up to 30 CPM dry cycle; 18-25 CPM real-world |
| Footprint | Long linear frame that grows with lanes and stations | 44 × 52 in (1,100.5 × 1,315.5 mm); 65.6 in high |
| Capital cost | Generally a multiple of a single-head rotary machine | From $45,000 USD (single-filler configuration) |
| Downstream equipment | Supply, checkweighing, labeling and case packing sized for high CPM | Optional weight checker, labeling and variable data coding |
| Best fit | Very high single-SKU volume on long runs | Multi-SKU fresh producers up to 30 CPM |
Two costs are easy to miss. A filler running 120 cups per minute needs product supply, checkweighing, labeling and case packing that keep pace, so installed cost runs well beyond the filler. And nameplate speed only pays if the line runs full; a fast machine idle half of every shift costs more per cup than a right-sized one. Our guides to cup filling and sealing machine cost and optimizing your production footprint cover both calculations.
Changeover Complexity on Inline Cup Filling Lines
Changeover is where inline and rotary lines differ most day to day. On a multi-lane machine every format part exists once per lane, so moving from an 8 oz round cup to a 16 oz square tub can mean changing:
- Cup carrier plates along the full length of the chain
- A denester magazine and separating tool on each lane
- Nozzles and pistons on every lane, followed by a lane-by-lane fill-weight check
- Sealing tools and film-cutting dies for the new cup pattern
- Lid placers, snap-on tooling and gas hoods across all lanes
Allergen changeovers multiply too, because more nozzles and manifold passages mean more product-contact surfaces to clean and swab. Under FALCPA, as amended by the FASTER Act, sesame has been the ninth major US food allergen since January 1, 2023, so plants running tahini-based and sesame-free SKUs need changeovers they can verify.
The SDH-R uses one set of change parts per format, stores recipes on its HMI and typically changes between SKUs in under about 15 minutes. Food-grade 304 stainless steel, tool-free strip-down and optional CIP (clean-in-place) keep allergen cleaning manageable.

Request a quoteInline vs Rotary Cup Filler: Decision Table
Use this table as a first-pass filter. If most answers land in the right-hand column, an inline line deserves a serious quote; if they land in the middle column, a rotary machine such as the SDH-R is likely the better buy. Our rotary vs inline filling machines comparison goes deeper.
Inline vs rotary cup filler decision table
| Question | Choose the SDH-R rotary when | Consider an inline cup filler when |
|---|---|---|
| Sustained output needed | Up to 30 CPM (18-25 CPM real-world) covers demand | You need well above 30 CPM, hour after hour |
| Number of SKUs | Several products, flavors or cup sizes share one machine | One or two SKUs run on long, uninterrupted shifts |
| Changeover frequency | Daily, or several changeovers per shift | Changeovers are rare and can be scheduled |
| Floor space | Room is tight and a 44 × 52 in footprint matters | A long dedicated line fits your plant layout |
| Budget | From $45,000 USD for a single-filler setup | Capital covers a multi-lane line plus matching downstream equipment |
| Layered or topped products | Up to 3 fillers in one pass (base, drizzle, garnish) | You can justify extra dosing stations across every lane |
| Containers | Pre-formed cups and tubs, 2-32 oz with tooling | You want to thermoform cups from roll stock |
When an Inline Cup Filling Machine Is the Right Choice
Candor matters more than a single sale. We tell buyers to look at inline equipment instead of the SDH-R when they need:
- Sustained output above 30 CPM on one SKU. The SDH-R tops out at 30 cups per minute dry and 18-25 CPM in production. For 60 or more cups per minute of one product, a multi-lane inline cup filling machine is built for the job.
- Thermoformed cups. Forming cups from roll stock requires a form-fill-seal machine; the SDH-R does not thermoform.
- Aseptic or shelf-stable packaging. The SDH-R is not an aseptic or retort system.
- Frozen products. Ice cream and other frozen desserts are outside what we claim for the SDH-R.
- Fills below 50 g. Our standard range starts at 50 g, with 2 oz cups at the low end; tiny dipping cups at high speed suit a dedicated multi-lane portion filler.
There is also a middle zone. At roughly 35 to 50 cups per minute across several products, model one inline line against two SDH-R machines in parallel: two rotary machines can run different SKUs at once, keep producing while one is in sanitation, and often take less floor than a long inline frame. Our guide to scaling a hummus production line covers the planning.
When the SDH-R Rotary Is the Better Buy Than an Inline Line
The SDH-R is a fully automatic rotary cup filling, sealing and lidding machine. An indexing turret carries pre-formed cups through every station in one pass, so one compact frame does the work an inline line spreads along a much longer chain:
- Cup loading and denesting with a pneumatic denester
- Base filling with a servo-driven volumetric piston at ±0.5% accuracy
- Optional second or third filler for paste, spices, nuts, oil or a liquid garnish
- Roll-film membrane sealing for a tamper-evident heat seal
- Optional nitrogen MAP flushing
- Optional plastic lid pick-and-place or snap-on lidding, then discharge to the conveyor
That layout favors producers running many SKUs at moderate volume: regional hummus, salsa and dip makers, co-packers, and specialty dairy and plant-based brands. Up to three fillers in one pass make it a practical multi-head cup filling machine, and the servo cup filler drive holds weights across a wide viscosity range. Full specifications and pricing are on the SDH-R product page.
Product Behavior Matters on Any Inline or Rotary Cup Filler
Inline or rotary, the product decides how well the line runs. These are the issues we engineer around most often:
- Viscosity and particulates: thick hummus and chunky salsa need a piston filler and large-bore valving so herbs, shredded cucumber and nut pieces pass without bridging. On a multi-lane machine, uneven particulate flow makes lane-to-lane weights drift apart.
- Stringing and drips: a suck-back nozzle stops tails landing on the cup flange and weakening the seal; a cut-off nozzle suits products that break cleanly.
- Syneresis and oil separation: products that weep or separate, such as tzatziki or tahini-rich dips, need a consistent, well-mixed supply.
- Aeration: trapped air changes the weight of each dosed volume, so deaerated product and steady supply pressure keep ±0.5% achievable.
- Fill temperature: the SDH-R targets fresh and refrigerated cups filled at a pumpable temperature; hot fills, viscosity extremes and unusual particulates are confirmed with our engineering team before quoting.
Seal integrity depends on temperature, pressure, dwell time and a clean flange. A multi-lane machine must hold those settings uniformly across every seal cavity, so one cold or contaminated cavity can reject a full lane of output. A rotary sealing station has fewer cavities to set up and diagnose.
Sealing, MAP and Food Safety on Inline Cup Filling and Sealing Machines
Both inline and rotary cup sealers can add modified atmosphere packaging. On the SDH-R, optional nitrogen flushing reduces residual oxygen to 0.3-0.4%, and typical refrigerated shelf life extends from roughly 7-10 days to 30-45+ days, depending on the product. Our MAP cup filler page and our article on nitrogen flushing for dip shelf life explain how residual oxygen, seal quality and the cold chain work together.
The SDH-R is CE marked, uses FDA-compliant food-contact materials and is UL listed. It is designed to support plants operating under FDA FSMA Preventive Controls (21 CFR Part 117), HACCP, BRCGS or SQF programs, Canada's SFCR and EU Regulation (EC) 1935/2004. Certification belongs to your plant's food-safety program, not to any filler, inline or rotary.
Questions to Ask Before You Buy an Inline Cup Filling Machine
Whichever format you lean toward, put these questions to every vendor, including us:
- What is the real-world output with my product, cup and fill weight, rather than the dry-cycle figure?
- How many SKUs, cup sizes and allergen changeovers will I run each week, and how long does each take, including weight verification?
- How much floor space does the complete line need, from product supply to case packing?
- Which change parts are needed per format, and per lane?
- How is the machine cleaned and validated between allergens, and is CIP available?
- What are the lead time, warranty, service coverage and total installed cost per cup?
For the SDH-R, the answers are straightforward: 8-12 weeks lead time from order confirmation, a 12-month warranty, and service centers in Alberta, New Jersey and California. To get a quote, send us your product, cup size, target cups per minute and options; we may ask a few questions about your application and typically reply within about 24 hours.

Inline Cup Filling Machine — Frequently Asked Questions
No. The Hummus Pack SDH-R is a fully automatic rotary cup filling, sealing and lidding machine built around an indexing turret, not a linear conveyor or multi-lane frame. It denests, fills, seals, optionally nitrogen flushes and lids pre-formed cups in one pass at up to 30 cups per minute dry, or 18-25 CPM in real production, at ±0.5% fill accuracy.
Inline cup filling machine prices vary with lane count, stations and downstream equipment, and multi-lane lines generally cost a multiple of a single-head rotary machine. The Hummus Pack SDH-R rotary machine starts from $45,000 USD for the single-filler configuration, with price scaling for additional fillers, MAP, labeling and custom tooling. Compare total installed cost per cup, not just the filler price.
Inline cup filler throughput is roughly lanes multiplied by cycles per minute, so multi-lane lines commonly run from about 60 to 200+ cups per minute. The Hummus Pack SDH-R rotary machine reaches up to 30 cups per minute on a dry cycle and 18-25 CPM in real production, depending on product, cup size, fill weight and options. Choose by sustained demand, not peak speed.
On a multi-lane cup filler, cup pockets, denesters, nozzles, sealing tools and lid placers exist once per lane, so every cup-size or allergen changeover multiplies the parts to swap, clean and calibrate. The Hummus Pack SDH-R rotary machine uses one set of change parts per format, recalls recipes on its HMI and typically changes SKUs in under about 15 minutes.
The Hummus Pack SDH-R fills 50 g to 500 g (about 2 oz to 17 oz) as standard at ±0.5% accuracy with a servo-driven volumetric piston. Standard cups are 4, 8, 10 and 16 oz, with custom sizes from 2 oz to 32 oz using matching tooling. It runs pre-formed round, square and rectangular cups; it does not thermoform cups.
Yes, both formats can add modified atmosphere packaging. On the Hummus Pack SDH-R, optional nitrogen flushing reduces residual oxygen to 0.3-0.4%, and typical refrigerated shelf life extends from roughly 7-10 days to 30-45+ days, depending on the product. Results also depend on clean flanges, correct seal settings and an unbroken cold chain. Our MAP cup filler page explains the setup.
