Our Engineering Team: Configuring the SDH-R Around Your Product
Hummus Pack machines are designed and built in Calgary, Alberta, powered by Alter Pack, which brings decades of experience in food packaging machinery. Our engineering team works on one platform, the SDH-R automatic rotary cup filling, sealing and lidding machine, and most of its daily work is configuration: matching that platform to a specific product, cup and closing method.
What the team configures on every project
- Filler type: the servo-driven volumetric piston filler is standard for pastes and liquids. Options add vibration fillers for powders, garnish fillers for nuts and herbs, peristaltic pumps for oils and dressings, or a custom filler; up to three run in one pass.
- Nozzle: cut-off or suck-back (drip-free) nozzles, with large-bore valving when the product carries particulates such as herbs, shredded cucumber or nut pieces.
- Cup tooling: change parts for standard 4, 8, 10 and 16 oz cups, or custom 2-32 oz sizes in round, square or rectangular shapes.
- Closing: roll-film membrane heat sealing, pre-die-cut lids, plastic lid pick-and-place, or a snapping device for over-top lids.
- MAP: optional nitrogen flushing that reduces residual oxygen to 0.3-0.4%, typically extending refrigerated shelf life from roughly 7-10 days to 30-45+ days, depending on the product.
Most of the engineering judgment goes into how a product behaves between hopper and cup. A stiff hummus or nut butter needs piston speed and nozzle geometry that avoid trapping air. A thin salsa needs a suck-back nozzle so it does not drip onto the cup flange and weaken the seal. Products that separate oil or weep need a fill sequence that keeps the cup shelf-ready.

How the SDH-R Is Designed and Built in Calgary
The SDH-R is a fully automatic rotary machine: an indexing turret carries each pre-formed cup through denesting, filling, membrane sealing, optional nitrogen flushing and optional lidding in one pass. Arranging the stations around a dial keeps the footprint to 44 × 52 in (1,100.5 × 1,315.5 mm), 65.6 in (1,666 mm) tall.
Sanitary construction and cleaning
The machine is built from food-grade 304 stainless steel, a standard choice for food equipment because it is non-porous, corrosion-resistant and stands up to routine sanitation. Product-contact parts strip down without tools, and a CIP (clean-in-place) system is available. Tool-free strip-down matters most for allergen control: sesame became the ninth major US food allergen on January 1, 2023 under the FASTER Act, so a plant running hummus alongside sesame-free SKUs needs contact parts it can take apart, clean and verify between runs.
Controls and accuracy
A PLC runs the machine, and operators work from an HMI that stores recipes per SKU and raises diagnostic alerts. Stored recipes help keep changeover under about 15 minutes. The servo-driven piston holds fill-weight accuracy to ±0.5%, and an optional weight checker with a feedback loop adds control over giveaway and underfills.

Who We Build For, and When the SDH-R Is Not the Right Fit
We build for fresh and refrigerated food producers who fill pre-formed cups and tubs at a pumpable temperature, typically 50-500 g (about 2-17 oz) per cup, and who want several SKUs or cup sizes on one machine. The main categories:

When the SDH-R is not the right machine
- Single-SKU lines above 30 CPM: the SDH-R tops out at 30 cups per minute dry. If one SKU needs more, an inline cup filling machine is usually the better investment.
- Aseptic or retort shelf-stable products: the SDH-R is neither an aseptic filler nor a retort system. MAP extends refrigerated shelf life; it does not make a product shelf-stable.
- Frozen products: ice cream and other frozen desserts are outside its scope.
- Very small portions or cup forming: fills below 50 g, such as 1 oz cups, are outside the standard range, and the machine does not thermoform cups.
